As you look forward to your healed breast reduction surgery, you may be wondering, “What will my breast reduction results really look like?”
Ideally, you’ll be happy to see an overall reduction in breast size and volume, improved breast shape and symmetry, and small hard-to-see scars where your incisions were made.
Those patients who plan to undergo this surgery in the near future will have undoubtedly skimmed through hundreds of breast reduction before and after photos to see examples of results like these.
In this article, we’ll discuss what you can expect during breast reduction recovery. We’ll also review the most common breast reduction incision site patterns and how long it should take to see your results.
Directly after your procedure, you will wake up in the recovery room and be monitored for a short time. Make sure that you have someone close to you who can take you home after surgery.
You will go home with bandages and a padded surgical bra. Make sure you know the guidelines surrounding what type of support/compression bra or compression garment you should be wearing at all times and for how long throughout your recovery. This should be included with your recovery instructions and breast reduction recovery tips.
If you have discomfort following surgery, which is normal, you can minimize this with prescription pain medications.
It’s also important to rest and try not to do too much. Heavy lifting and even light exercise are to be avoided for about a month or more, and be sure that you wait before bathing until you get the “okay” from your surgeon.
You should be able to slowly reincorporate your normal activities as the weeks go on.
During the first few days and breast reduction recovery week after your breast reduction, you can expect swelling, bruising, and continued soreness, although these symptoms should all diminish with time. Residual swelling will be the last symptom to go, and this can take months.
After the first week to three weeks following surgery, each incision should close and begin to soften and fade in the following weeks. Finally, with your healed scars from breast reduction surgery results are just around the corner.
Healed breast reduction scars will appear wherever the patient had incision sites during their procedure. Your surgeon will decide the best incision pattern for your unique situation. This is usually decided at one of your pre-surgery appointments after speaking with you about your desired outcome and performing a short physical exam.
The two incision patterns that are most commonly used with breast reduction procedures include the inverted T incision pattern and the vertical incision pattern.
The inverted T (or anchor) incision pattern can remove the most breast tissue, skin, and fat to reduce the overall size of the breasts. This incision pattern requires an incision around the areola edge, a vertical incision on the lower half of the breast, and an inframammary fold incision.
The vertical (lollipop) incision pattern only requires the areola incision and the vertical incision. This method cannot remove excess fat, skin, and breast tissue as effectively as the inverted T method but is the preferred option for more modest reduction surgery.
After breast reduction surgery, the healing process depends on how well patients follow guidance during the breast reduction recovery process.
During the first week, rest, ice packs, a supportive bra, and prescribed pain medication help control swelling while excess breast tissue has been removed and the body adapts to a new breast size.
Most plastic surgeons advise avoiding underwire bras, focusing on a healthy diet, and watching for potential complications as scars begin to settle toward a natural skin tone.
By two weeks, many patients notice a smoother contour, feel more comfortable transitioning into new bras, and experience a smooth recovery when reduction surgery instructions are followed, supporting a smooth recovery throughout the healing process.
It typically takes about three to four months or more to see your full results after a breast reduction procedure.
Most patients will be happy that they can see some of their results right away after their procedure. However, swelling often obscures the full outcome for the duration of the recovery time.
Unfortunately, swelling generally lingers for several months after surgery. Sometimes, the swelling can appear uneven as well, so don’t immediately become alarmed if your breasts aren’t totally even some of the time during the recovery period.
This is normal and to be expected during the healing process. Once the swelling has completely disappeared, you’ll achieve full recovery and be left with your complete results.
If you opt to combine your reduction with a significant breast lift it can take slightly longer to achieve.
As with any surgery, the general rule is that the more incisions and manipulation you require during your procedure, the more involved the recovery will be.
Excess blood or surgical site discharge, intense pain that doesn’t go away with prescription painkillers, a fever, and uneven swelling can all be dangerous symptoms as your body heals.
It’s always better to err on the side of caution. If you have concerns about how your surgical site is healing after your breast reduction, do not hesitate to contact your surgeon and be seen.
Insurance may cover breast reduction if it is deemed medically necessary due to symptoms like chronic back, neck, or shoulder pain. Coverage typically requires medical documentation, proof of conservative treatments, and insurance preauthorization.
