As the years pass, a woman’s breasts may not have the shape, volume, or position they once did. That’s why many women decide to have breast augmentation.
Breast augmentation surgery can increase the size of the breasts and restore lost volume to enhance your contours. You also may decide to have a breast lift at the same time to correct sagging and drooping.
Dr. Smita R. Ramanadham can enhance your breasts to give you the breast shape and self-confidence you desire. She is double board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in plastic surgery procedures in the New Jersey.

What is Breast Augmentation
Dr. Smita may recommend breast implants based on your size, contours, and aesthetic goals during your consultation for breast augmentation.
Breast implants come in many sizes, shapes, textures, and profiles, and each of them must be carefully considered to achieve the best results.
You can choose silicone or saline implants. Silicone implants tend to feel more like natural breast tissue, but saline implants require a smaller incision because the saline is added after the shell is inserted.

A popular option for many breast enhancement surgery patients is the gummy bear implants, made of solid silicone, which will stay in place if there is an implant rupture.
Another factor to consider is incision location; under the breast is the most common because the scar is difficult to see. But Dr. Smita may recommend incisions in the armpit or around the nipple, depending on your anatomy and situation.

Breast Augmentation Incision Options
Various incision types are employed in breast augmentation surgery. Dr. Smita discusses these breast augmentation options in a personal consultation, helping you decide the best approach for optimal results.
Inframammary Incision
This incision type is a discreet horizontal incision beneath the breast crease, ensuring complete scar concealment. Positioned just within or slightly higher based on patient preference, the inframammary fold incision is a straightforward approach for implant insertion, with nearly imperceptible scars post-healing.
Periareolar Incision
A semi-circular incision is crafted along the lower areola border, between the pigmented area and normal breast skin, spanning from 3 o’clock to 9 o’clock for precision.
Transaxillary Endoscopic Incision
In this technique, a small incision in the armpit allows for the implant placement of a deflated saline breast implant under the chest muscle using an endoscope, a camera-equipped tube.
The implant is filled with saline to achieve the desired size, eliminating breast incisions. Scars are discreetly nestled in an armpit crease. Note: This method is exclusive to saline-filled breast implants.
Types of Breast Implants Options
Breast implant surgery offers different breast implant types, including saline or cohesive silicone gel. Modern silicone implants surpass earlier models, featuring stronger shells and more stable gel fillings for enhanced safety and performance.
Silicone gel breast implants exhibit high cohesiveness, often likened to gummy bears. Resilient and soft, they maintain cohesion even when cut. The choice between implant types depends on patient preference and Dr. Smita’s evaluation for achieving the desired aesthetic outcome.
Silicone Breast Implants
Silicone gel breast implants feature a silicone outer shell filled with silicone gel, offering various sizes and smooth or textured shells.
FDA-approved for breast enlargement in women aged 22 or older, and for breast reconstruction in all age groups, these implants are also employed in revision surgeries to enhance or correct the outcomes of initial procedures.
Saline Breast Implants
Saline breast implants consist of a silicone outer shell filled with sterile saltwater during the operation. They vary in size and may have smooth or textured shells.
FDA-approved for women aged 18 and older for breast augmentation, saline implants are also employed in revision breast augmentation surgery to enhance or correct the outcomes of previous procedures.
Breast Augmentation Procedure Candidates
Ideal candidates for breast augmentation surgery have the following characteristics:
-
Nonsmokers. If you smoke, Dr. Smita will require you to stop several weeks before and after your procedure because this can affect the healing process.
-
Normal weight. You should be close to your ideal weight and not dieting when you have the procedure.
-
No major health issues. Problems such as heart disease, cancer, and other serious conditions need to be evaluated before you should go ahead with breast augmentation.
-
Realistic outlook. Breast augmentation can have outstanding benefits, but you should have realistic expectations about what it can do for you.
-
You should want to have breast augmentation for yourself and not for your partner.
Breast Augmentation Risks
When you choose a skilled, board-certified plastic surgeon for your procedure, you’re unlikely to have any serious problems. But breast augmentation is surgery with general anesthesia and breast augmentation involves risks. Dr. Smita will talk about surgery risks during your consultation and how to reduce any chances of problems.
The most common risks and complications are:
-
A need for revision surgery to correct complications, and some may want to have revision surgery to put in different size implants.
-
Bleeding and bruising that goes beyond the first week
-
Persistent breast pain that may require revision surgery
-
Infection at the incision site or around the breast implant
-
Capsular contracture, which means the scar tissue around the implant squeezes it and misshapes the implant, requiring revision surgery.
-
Leaking or rupture of the breast implant. If this happens with a saline implant, you will know because the implant deflates. You may not know if it’s a silicone implant; this is usually detected on an MRI.
-
Skin rippling where the doctor placed the implants.
-
Implant movement
-
Fluid buildup around the implant, which requires insertion of surgical drains
There also are rare side effects associated with anesthesia; remember to tell your doctor before the surgery if you are allergic to anesthetics.
Also, talk to your surgeon immediately after surgery if you have a fever and see redness in and around the breast. And watch for a warm sensation around your incisions as this could be signs of infection.
Breast Augmentation Recovery
Immediately after the procedure, you’ll probably feel sore and groggy, but you should feel better after a few hours. But you’ll need someone to take you home and stay overnight.
Most women report that the first three to five days after surgery are the most uncomfortable. Dr. Smita will prescribe pain medication, but you can probably take over-the-counter painkillers after a few days.
After a week or so, you should get back to your routine, including light exercise. But you should avoid strenuous workouts, such as jogging or aerobics, for at least a month. If you have a labor-intensive job, you should take time off for about three weeks.
Most patients fully recover from breast augmentation after two months and can resume all regular activities, including intense physical activity.
One of the most important things to remember during recovery is to take it easy, wear your surgical bra and that it will take time to see your final results. Some people may have to wait three months or six months until the implants settle into their new location. By the time several months pass, your new breasts will feel like your own.
Breast Augmentation Cost in New Jersey
Like most cosmetic procedures, the breast augmentation cost New Jersey residents pay will vary greatly depending on the exact type of surgery being performed and several other factors.
To provide ballpark figures, however, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), costs may range anywhere from $6,000 to $12,000 for breast augmentation surgery. Keep in mind this is only a baseline range.
Complementary Procedures
When you have your breast augmentation, you may want to consider other procedures such as a mommy makeover which includes liposuction and a tummy tuck. Also, while breast augmentation can increase the size of the breasts, you may need a breast lift to address sagging or drooping.
Dr. Smita can remove extra skin and tissue during breast augmentation and lift the breasts to a higher position, giving you a younger and perkier appearance.
If you want a small size increase, she also may recommend fat transfer. This procedure uses liposuction to remove fat from a problem area, do a fat transfer into the breasts.
For patients interested in other procedures, please talk to Dr. Smita about your goals. For example, having more than one procedure performed at once is often more cost and time-effective.
