Microneedling Aftercare Tips

Microneedling Aftercare Tips

Microneedling is a minimally invasive skincare treatment that promotes collagen production and helps address various skin concerns. Microneedling can assist with wrinkles, acne and acne scars, hyperpigmentation, sun spots, and more. While the procedure is minimally invasive, proper microneedling aftercare is critical for achieving optimal results.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling (also called collagen induction therapy) involves using tiny, sterilized needles to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin. The little pokes required during a microneedling procedure stimulate the skin’s natural healing process.

This, in turn, prompts increased collagen and elastin production in the treated skin. Over time, microneedling can improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, spots, scars, dry skin, and other issues.

Microneedling Recovery Overview

When it comes to aftercare, microneedling doesn’t involve much. Still, you’ll need to follow your surgeon’s directions closely.

Directly after your microneedling treatment, your skin will appear red and feel tender. This is similar to a moderate sunburn.

Some patients also experience some mild swelling, bleeding, and dryness post-treatment. These side effects are temporary and typically subside within 24 to 72 hours.

Still, your skin will continue to heal and regenerate over the next few weeks. During this time, you may have more sensitive skin and peeling skin. This is normal.

Most patients can resume normal activities within 24 to 48 hours. Be sure to use a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water and wait to resume your usual skincare routine if it involves harsh active ingredients (retinol, beta hydroxy acids, alpha hydroxy acids, etc.). Protect your skin from sun damage. Avoid anything that could disrupt the healing process as you develop new skin.

Aftercare for Microneedling: Tips & How-Tos

1. Follow your plastic surgeon’s aftercare instructions.

Every microneedling procedure is unique, and your practitioner will provide personalized aftercare instructions based on your skin’s needs and the extent of your treatment.

Always follow their advice and ask any questions you may have about the recovery process. If you experience any unusual symptoms around the treated area, contact them to learn more.

2. Do not expose your skin to the sun.

After microneedling, your skin is more sensitive to the sun’s harmful UV rays. For this reason, it’s important to avoid direct sun exposure for at least a few days. When you do need to go outside, be sure to protect your skin with UV protective clothing and a SPF of at least 50.

3. Don’t touch your skin.

Picking at your skin can increase the risk of infection and scarring. It may also delay healing.

Therefore, resist the temptation to touch, pick, or scratch your skin after microneedling. This is a common urge after this procedure as well as after chemical peels, laser treatments etc. While your skin may feel rough or slightly flaky as it starts to peel, just let it go and avoid removing any loose pieces.

4. Refrain from exercise.

Take it easy right after this procedure. No lifting anything heavy or engaging in vigorous exercise. Strenuous activities, heavy sweating, and exposure to heat can increase inflammation and discomfort after microneedling.

5. Use clean towels and pillowcases.

Hygiene is especially important after microneedling as it can help prevent infection. Make sure to sleep on a clean pillowcase and use fresh, clean towels when drying your face. If you clog pores on your freshly microneedled skin, an infection can cause serious additional problems.

6. Avoid makeup for several days.

Although you may be tempted to cover up the redness on your skin, it’s best to avoid wearing makeup for at least the first two to three days after microneedling. Your skin needs time to heal, and applying makeup could introduce bacteria or cause other skin issues.

The skincare products you do use should be easy on your skin and include soothing ingredients like hyaluronic acid. It’s also okay to keep your skin hydrated with a gentle moisturizer approved by your surgeon. Ask your surgeon for additional skin care tips if you have questions about specific skin routines or products.

7. Consider using collagen-stimulating peptides.

Some surgeons will recommend using collagen stimulating peptides after microneedling to amplify the already-active effects of this treatment. Your skin’s barrier will thank you.

8. Avoid hot baths and saunas.

Excess moisture (especially hot moisture) around your skin as it heals can cause problems. If you can, take short, lukewarm or slightly hot showers for a few days after your treatment.

How much does microneedling cost?

The cost of microneedling depends on what your goals are for the procedure, the extent to which you have skin issues, how many treatments you require, and whether additional treatments are being performed as well. You’ll also notice that rates vary by city and surgeon experience.

When can I wear makeup after microneedling?

It’s recommended that patients wait at least 24 to 48 hours before applying makeup after microneedling. During this time, your skin is more vulnerable and sensitive, so applying makeup can introduce bacteria or clog your pores and cause problems. Most patients can resume their normal makeup routine once the skin is healed.
